ISO/PWI 5946 Bamboo-based Activated Carbon

Scope

This document specifies terms and definitions, classifications, requirements, test methods, inspection rule, marking, packing, transport and storage for bamboo based activated carbons. It is applicable to the bamboo based activated carbons and its briquettes.

Purpose

Bamboo is widely distributed across the world. It is an opportunity and challenge that how to turn the fast-growing, sustainable green biomass resources into a gold mine, which also is an urgent issue to be addressed.

Bamboo-based activated carbon (BAC) can be technically obtained by physical activation of bamboo charcoal that manufactured by carbonizing of bamboo materials and processing waste. The product appearance can be powders, participles, and briquettes. BAC can be seen as a new member to activated carbon family, whom has coal-, wood-, and nut shell-based activated carbon already. The BAC is modification of raw bamboo charcoal, en route to high-valued, and efficient application in bamboo industry. Featured by its unique pore structure and size distribution, BAC has proved versatile applications in industrial use, such like solvent recovery, pressure swing adsorption, catalyst carrier, molecular sieve, and it even used in food and pharmaceutical purposes. Increases in global demand of activated carbon continue to be an upside for the industrial, accordingly it promotes the development and applications of BAC. BAC is believed and conformed to be the most simple, effective, and efficient innovative product in bamboo industry. Nonetheless, there is no international standard available to BAC industry, which is likely to induce trade conflict between international business for lacking wellaccepted technical guidelines, it also makes a loss of competitiveness of the sustainable green product in the market promotion.

Hereby, a new work item is proposed to draft an international standard regarding bamboo-based activated carbon, it is in best interest of consumer, manufacturers and market development. The making of a BAC standard is of great significance in sustainable development of bamboo industry, promoting ecological progress of international community, and benefiting both socially and economically for bamboo regions across the world. This new work item proposal will not only demonstrate China’s responsibility to participate in international standard-making, but also improve the capability of making one. Besides, it also shows China’s contribution to international standard system construction, and stimulates to seek discursive power and international influence of China’s bamboobased activated carbon in global activation carbon industry. That, in turn, severs the development of bamboo charcoal products in regional and global bamboo industry.
