Both guidelines and referenced model are put forward for stakeholders to carry out efficient reuse and recycle of express packaging. Requirements and criteria with the respect of energy and resource consumption, environmental performance and quality are specified for the assessment of express packaging product including envelope, sack, container, filler, tapes, and etc..
Packaging as one of the most common elements in consumption has various functions and provides great convenience to consumers. In recent years, with the continuous expansion of the global market and the rapidly growing internet and social activities, e-businesses, especially online shopping, have become increasingly popular worldwide. With the booming of logistics industry, the quantity of packaging continues to surge, and the corresponding excessive resource consumption and mounting environmental pollution have become increasingly acute.
With wide acceptance of sustainable development, economic development at the price of exhaustion of natural resources and deterioration of environment is no longer welcome. Because the packaging industry is closely related to environmental protection and sustainable development, green packaging is a new pursuit of the stakeholders to achieve a balance between economic growth and ecological development.
There is currently no published ISO standard about green packaging, or standard under development in this respect. With the expansion of cross-border e-commerce and rises of the international retailer giants such as Amazon, Alibaba, eBay and etc., the sustainability of the express packaging arouse wide concern. The present standard proposes material unification, light weight, innocuousness, cleaner production, recyclable and reusable as the Principle, and specifies a set of green-related requirements for different express packaging product along their life cycle stages, which can shed light upon the design and development of green express packaging.
