CEN/TC 207 N 2104, Furniture— Electrically operated — Entrapment, shear and compression requirements

Scope

This European Standard specifies requirements for electrically operated furniture within the reach of all persons, pets and for which the main intended use is resulting in change of positions for an electrically operated furniture in domestic and non-domestic use.

The safety requirements are based on the hazards identified during the intended use, and reasonably foreseeable misuse, throughout the operational life of the furniture.

This standard includes considerations and requirements related to children in and around the products and the associated hazards.

However, in general, it does not take into account damage to properties or the environment.

This European Standard does not apply to seating incorporated in other machines, seating for use in fairgrounds and amusement parks or seating for transportation applications .

This standard applies to the electrical operated furniture and its components only. If the electrical operated furniture has additional functions or can be converted into other products, other relevant European Standards may apply.

This European Standard is not applicable to electrical operated furniture which is manufactured before the date of publication of the standard.

Purpose

The purpose is develop a European Standard for the entrapment, shear and compression risks posed by electrically actuated furniture. The purpose is to have the document referenced by a harmonized standard under the Machinery Directive.

In 2017 the guide to the Machinery Directive was amended to classify electrically actuated furniture as a machine. Currently there are no harmonized standards for this type of product which makes compliance difficult for manufacturers and importers, as there is no standard approach.

CENELEC is working on the electrical side of the product via a modification to IEC 60332-116: 2019 Household and similar electrical appliances. Particular requirements for furniture with electrically motorized parts.

This does not adequately cover the entrapment, shear and compression risks posed by motorised furniture to all users (children and adults), and these are also not covered in existing furniture standards.
