Two alternative sampling and processing methods, whose comparability has been proven in a round robin test, are specified for indoor air[5]. Sampling can take place using sorbent tubes with subsequent thermal desorption and GC-MS analysis. Alternatively, sampling can take on other types of sorbent tubes that are subsequently analysed by solvent extraction with GC-MS.
The current document focusses on sorbent tubes filled with Florisil when using solvent extraction. Especially in Japan it becomes more common to use octadecyl silica (ODS) or styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer (SDB) with solvent extraction with analysing phthalates. This method allows lower detection limits and can be useful especially for background measurements. The method and the results of comparative measurements are included as informative annex.
