The safety requirements are based on the hazardous situations and events identified during the intended use, and reasonably foreseeable misuse, throughout the operational phases of the furniture. The identified hazards which is specified in clause 4 are based on the knowledge and experience of the design, incidents, accidents and other risks.
This standard includes considerations and requirements related to children in and around the products and the associated hazards.
The user phase of the furniture is considered by this standard.
However, in general, it does not take into account
— Damage to properties or the environment
This European Standard does not apply to:
— Seating incorporated in other machines
— Seats on vehicle
This standard applies to the electrical operated furniture and its components only. If the electrical operated furniture has additional functions or can be converted into other products, other relevant European Standards may apply.
This European Standard is not applicable to electrical operated furniture which is manufactured before the date of publication of the standard.
The purpose is develop a European Standard for the mechanical risks posed by electrically actuated furniture. The purpose is to have the document accepted as a harmonized standard under the Machinery Directive.
In 2017 the guide to the Machinery Directive was amended to classify electrically actuated furniture as a machine. Currently there are no harmonized standards for this type of product which makes compliance difficult for manufacturers and importers, as there is no standard approach.
CENELEC is working on the electrical side of the product via a modification to IEC 60332-116: 2019 Household and similar electrical appliances. Particular requirements for furniture with electrically motorized parts.
This does not adequately cover three main areas:
• Stability
• Durability
