ISO/TC 47/N 3227 - ISO/NP 5762 "Aluminum Polyoxychloride for Water Treatment - Specifications"

Scope

Water conditioning with the use of coagulants – poly aluminum chloride (PAC)

This standard specifies liquid and solid coagulants based on poly aluminum chloride, aimed at water purification and treatment for domestic water supply and industrial water supply, at sanitary sewage treatment for industry and agriculture, including those used for preparation of solutions of substances, reagents, and products, those used for studies, tests, measurements, analyses, in technical operations and processes.

Purpose

PAC is one of the most common coagulants for water treatment. Its quality directly affects the efficiency of water treatment processes. In general, sanitary and hygienic standards in the field of drinking water supply differ from country to country, but in one way or another correlates with the requirements of the World Health Organization (WHO).Then market needs are to ensure safely managed drinking water (especially) and waste water.

The standard defines using clean reagents for drinking water (not waste) and shows how this can be tracked. The standard will allow introducing uniform requirements for the quality of PAC, as well as raw materials for its production.

Using this document, key consumers - water utilities and different plants - could be sure of the quality of the product used. Else it is necessary separate the requirements for aluminum polyoxychloride for drinking water and wastewater.

The key advantages of the proposed standard are:

1. The standard contains universal methods to determine impurities and main quality parameters (basic capacity, contents of aluminum oxide and chloride ions) in poly aluminum chloride

2. Regulate pH, residual aluminum, chlorides and heavy metal ions for the whole concentration range of the active ingredient in the agent (i.e. the standard covers both dry solid and liquid products).

3. Avoid use of low-quality raw materials (including aluminum scrap) in the production of poly aluminum chloride.

4. Characterize high- and low-basic products (given a non-linear change in properties at different concentrations).

5. Regulate frequency of and conditions for checking poly aluminum chloride against declared parameters.
