Concept system is defined as a set of concepts structured according to the relations among them. The concept system is a complicated pyramid structural system, which is the foundation of human being thinking and logic theory. They are used for supporting semantic interoperability and integration in domains, information classification and organization, indexing, retrieval, etc. With the development of artificial intelligence technology and ontology technology, the content and application scope of concept system are expanding. The issues about framework, classification, description and application of concept systems is becoming more and more important. This standard will recommend the characteristics of a concept system, which will provide guidance to various parties who are currently developing or who will develop a concept system. For those seeking to select and use an existing concept system, it will provide at least one from which to choose.
The purpose of this new project is:
a) clarify the basic theory of concepts and concept relations;
b) provides the criteria for a good concept system;
c) form a framework of concept system;
d) classify the concept system by strength and tightness of the relationship between concepts;
e) Propose some typical concept system types and provides their semantic characteristics;
f) Illustrate the relationship between this work and other standards developed by ISO/IEC JTC1 SC32 WG2.
There is a lot of confusion in the marketplace/business users about the different kinds of concept systems. This makes it difficult to select the right concept system for a particular use case.
