Scope
This document specifies the requirements for the inspection and maintenance of valves (including ball valves and valves with integrated pressure regulator (VIPRs)) for:
a) refillable transportable gas cylinders;
b) cylinder bundles;
c) pressure drums and tubes;
which convey compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases.
This document does not apply to valves for LPG.
NOTE Where there is no risk of ambiguity, gas cylinders, cylinder bundles, pressure drums and tubes are addressed with the collective term “gas cylinders” within this document.
This document applies to valves reused at the time of the periodic inspection of gas cylinders, cylinder bundles, pressure drums and tubes, and may be applied at any other time, e.g. at change of gas service (see ISO 11621).
This document does not apply to routine inspection of valves e.g. carried out at the time of gas cylinder filling.
Purpose
Following resolution 03/2019 taken by ISO/TC 58/SC2, it was decided to revise ISO 22434. The document was submitted to CD enquiry. When treating the comments, WG 14 needed to modify the scope of the document to clarify it. Initially, the scope covered only cylinder valves and LPG. The scope has been clarified to cover other pressure equipment (see proposed scope of the deliverable above). ISO 22434 is under Vienna Agreement (EN ISO 22434). A member body sent comments that at European level, there is an existing standard covering inspection and maintenance of LPG valves. Therefore, WG 14 decided also to exclude valves for LPG.
WG 14 convenor will ask ISO/TC 58/SC 2 during its next plenary meeting to consider if there is a need to have a separated ISO standard covering inspection and maintenance of LPG valves.
Consequently, since WG 14 proposes a modification of the scope for the revision of ISO 22434, a NWIP needs to be resubmitted.
WG 14 recommends that the proposed draft standard is registered at DIS stage since the document has already been subjected to CD enquiry and CD version was approved.
