ISO/TC 164/SC 3 N 1645 , ISO/NP 14577-7 Metallic materials - Instrumented indentation test for hardness and materials parameters - Part 7: Instrumented indentation test at elevated temperature

Scope

This part of ISO 14577 specifies the method of instrumented indentation test at elevated temperature. It specifies the instrumented indentation test machine and temperature range to performing tests at elevated temperature. It describes the additional verification and calibration of the machine for carrying out the instrumented indentation test at elevated temperature.

Purpose

Instrumented indentation test at elevated temperature has developed significantly over the past two decades. It is an attractive and increasingly popular technique that offers the ability to test material component representative of in-service condition above ambient temperature. It provides useful experimental observations into thermally activated deformation phenomena and generate key data for lifetime monitoring and prediction. This technique has already been used for applications in key industrial sectors including aerospace, avionics, automotive, manufacturing, nuclear energy, microelectronics etc. It is particularly useful for testing small material components such as coatings involving a temperature rise when used in service.

However, there is currently no relevant standards to provide guidance for performing instrumented indentation tests at elevated temperature, as a result, there is a lack of confidence in the data obtained. The aim of this document is to provide key guidance for instrumented indentation test at elevated temperature. It is expected to help end users in various industrial sectors to obtain high quality data hence further promote the technique.
