This test method can be used to measure very low levels activity concentrations, one or two orders of magnitude less than the usual natural levels of alpha emitting radionuclides.
The need of standard on a generic test method using alpha spectrometry to determine the activity concentration of alpha emitting radionuclides in natural samples, food samples or other types of samples from nuclear facilities is justified for test laboratory carrying out these measurements, required sometimes by national authorities, as laboratories may have to obtain a specific accreditation for radionuclides measurement in many kinds of test samples.
Furthermore, this standard avoids the redundancies of generic information from many others specifics standards dealing test methods radionuclides using alpha spectrometry.
