For other purposes, in particular factory production control, other methods may be used provided that an appropriate working relationship with the relevant reference method has been established. The sample is normally tested in a wet condition, but the test may also be carried out in a dry condition. The standard applies to natural, manufactured or recycled aggregates used in building or civil engineering.
The reference test is performed with the addition of water. Annex B (informative) gives details of how the test can be performed without the addition of water.
Annex C (informative) specifies the test performed with alternative narrow size fractions.
Annexes D and E (informative) describes methods for determining the wear of fine aggregates.
Precision data are given in Annex F (informative).
The main changes in this version are:
a) Clause 1; Scope, 2 Normative references, 3 Terms and definitions and 9 Test report have been updated according to the CEN rules.
b) Clauses 4 Principle and 6 Preparation of the test specimens have been clarified.
c) In clauses 7 and A.7, the test procedures have been simplified since the amount of water is now expressed in mass instead of volume.
d) In 5.2.4, the text about abrasive charge has been extended with two new notes, about working tolerances on steel ball diameter and about suitable steel ball hardness.
e) 5.2.7 and 5.2.8, on the gauge and the magnet: these clauses have been added as optional additional apparatus.
f) In Annex A, the formula for calculation of resistance to wear of railway ballast MDE,RB has been revised.
g) Annex C is reworded and the text about test report has been deleted since it is covered by new clause 9.
h) New Annexes D and E have been added i) Annex F Precision has been updated with new data.
