ISO/TC 38 N 3887, ISO/NP 5228 Textiles - Measurement of emission mass of fibre debris from textile products for microplastics detection - Domestic washing method

Scope

The method describes how to wash an end textile product using a domestic washing machine, collect the fibre debris discharged from the wastewater of the washing machine and measure the amount for each product.

Purpose

The microplastic pollution in the ocean is an urgent problem to tackle. In textile field, there is a concern of the microplastic pollution for daily washing of the textile products, so it is important to measure the amount of the fibre debris discharged from domestic washing machines during washing textile products in order to survey of the importance of source of the microplastic pollution.

This proposal specifies how to wash end textile products using a domestic washing machine. During washing, the fibre debris discharged from outlet of washing machine is collected by the filter and measured the amount. This fibre debris amount discharged from domestic washing machine during washing gives an information about the degree of the importance of microplastic pollution and about the importance of the development of end textile products that do not easily release the fibre debris.
