The method describes direct measurement of water samples without prior separation, as well as radiochemical separation using extraction chromatography, depending on the water sample analysed and ICP-MS design.
Thorium-232 is a naturally occurring radionuclide, with enhanced concentrations in water samples due to variations in geological conditions and certain human activities.
Enhanced activity concentrations of thorium-232 in drinking water presents a potential risk to human health. It is therefore important to monitor the thorium-232 content as part of the assessment of drinking water quality, in order to comply with international and national authority regulations. An International Standard on a test method for thorium-232 concentration in water samples is justified for test laboratories carrying out these measurements, required sometimes by national authorities, as laboratories may have to obtain a specific accreditation for radionuclide measurement in drinking water samples.
