CEN/TC 154 N 1567 The revision of EN 13450 - Aggregates for railway ballast Part 1 - Product standard & Part 2 Supporting information

Scope

This European Standard specifies the characteristics of aggregates for use in the construction of the upper layer of railway track.

Aggregates covered in this European Standard are Railway ballast.

Railway ballast refers to aggregates where 100 % of the surface of the particles can be described as totally crushed and that are obtained by processing natural, manufactured materials or recycled crushed unbound aggregates. Aggregates covered in this European Standard are coarse aggregates (see 3.1.10).

The non-harmonised Part 2 standard will provide non-contradictory complementary information to assist in the practical application of the Part 1 standard, including advice on the reasons for testing and declaring various characteristics and recommendations for the practical implementation of factory production control measures.

Purpose

There is a need for a technical update and need for major reconfiguration of the technical standard EN 13450 to meet the CPR requirements for harmonised standards, whilst still complying with the Essential Requirements set out in Mandate M125.

It is anticipated that the new standard will be in two parts: the Part 1 standard will be a Harmonised Standard which is cited in the OJEU; the Part 2 standard will provide additional non-contradictory complementary information for users of the Part 1 standard
