It can be used by ISO, IEC, and JTC1 Technical Committees and Sub-Committees to build on this work in developing standards for AI Applications in their areas of interest. The guidelines provide a macro level view of the AI Application context, the stakeholders and their roles, relationship to the life cycle of the system, and common AI application characteristics. The guidelines will reference but not duplicate or overlap other AI-related standards to build details.
Purpose
The proposed guidelines will provide a macro view of an AI Application and a common framework for standards developers, application developers, and other interested parties so that they would be able to answer the question: “What is an AI Application?”
Justification
This proposal is driven by the results of a gap analysis of use cases collected as part of the ISO/IEC JTC1 SC 42 Artificial Intelligence – Working Group 4 scope. It established that there was no unified macro level view of an AI Application’s context, the stakeholders and their roles, relationship to the application’s system life cycle, and common AI application characteristics. There are no existing international standards that provide such a framework. It is proposed that new work be undertaken to fill this gap to enhance understanding of AI Applications and the development of related standards.
AI Application Context, Stakeholders, and Characteristics:
The formulation of the Guidelines for AI Applications will be based on the following: (1) The context of an AI Application - described with respect to Who (stakeholders), What, When, Where, Why, and How within its setting; (2) The stakeholders - including Provider and Its Management, Data Sources and Providers, Data Collectors and Preparers, Developers, AI Application Providers, Internal/External Users, Community, Authorities and Regulators; (3) Common AI Application characteristics - including Application Domain, Deployment Mode, Scope, Objectives, KPI’s, Threats and Vulnerabilities, AI Features, Societal Concerns, Challenges and Issues, Data Characteristics, Scenarios for Processes, Evaluation, Execution, and Retraining.
