Scope
This Working Draft describes the procedure for the determination of fluorine in copper, lead and zinc sulphide concentrates by sodium hydroxide fusion and fluoride ion selective electrode (FISE) detection. Fluoride ions are leached from the sodium hydroxide fusion and presented to the FISE. Potential interfering ions are masked by the use of a complexing agent and control of solution pH.
The method is applicable to fluorine in the following ranges:
Copper concentrates 0.005 – 0.3%
Lead concentrates 0.005 – 0.2%
Zinc concentrates 0.005 – 0.1%
Purpose
Fluorine in copper, lead and zinc concentrates is often a penalty element in the trading. However, the fluorine analytical method is not standardized, and the producers and smelters use their own analytical method.
