ISO/TC 263 N 114 , ISO/NP 23604 Method of determining specific surface area of coal.

Scope

This standard provides a method for determining the specific surface area of solid materials using gas adsorption.

This standard is applicable to the determination of specific surface area of coal, powder and porous materials (including nano-powders and nano-grade porous materials) with a determination range of 0.001 m2 / g to 1 000 m2 / g.

Purpose

The propose of standard in Annex A is to determine a standardize choice for the measure, applicable conditions and technical requirements, experimental steps and calculation method of coal's specific surface area.

The specific surface area is one of the important indexes for evaluation of catalyst, adsorbent and other porous materials such as asbestos, mineral wool, diatomite and clay mineral industry. And the specific surface area of coal is an important parameter to study the adsorption capacity of coal. The methods of measuring the surface area are: volume method, weight method, air carrier method, CTAB method, Blaine method, air transmission method, etc. At present, the BET method of gas adsorption are widely recognized for determine the specific surface area of solid material. But the in different laboratories, there are still some differences in technical requirements of tests of coal. It is expected that the proposed work will reduce problems in the promotion of application and international cooperation.

The liquid nitrogen adsorption can perform accurately to determine the specific surface area of mesoporous, but not accurately for micropore, which developed in coal samples. However, the specific surface area of micropore are correlate better with the Langmuir volume to represent the adsorption capacity of coal. Therefore, measure the total specific surface area is very important to study the adsorption of coal. However, the current test methods are not very suitable for coal samples. Therefore, it is necessary to explore new methods or improve existing methods, and establish a measurement standard for specific surface area of coal.
