CEN/TC 126 N 1253, Acoustics - Laboratory measurement of sound insulation of building elements - measurement of rolling sound insulation

Scope

This standard will specify the procedure to characterize building floor systems in laboratory in terms of structure borne rolling noise and define a reference rolling source. The standard will (i) specify laboratory measuring methods for determining data required for comparing products and materials and determining input data for predicting sound levels in building; (ii) define the expression of results.

Purpose

The issue considered is about structure-borne noise generated in buildings from rolling delivery trolleys and shopping carts, transmitted to dwellings next to or often above commercial spaces in urban areas, and thus disturbing inhabitants. The noise not only depends on the floor system type (base floor and floor covering) but also on the floor covering unevenness and irregularities (for example tile joints). The purpose of this proposal is to characterize, evaluate and predict this type of structure borne noise the same way as for impact noise but using a reference rolling source, which would allow testing floor and floor covering in laboratory as well as measuring the structureborne noise generated in situ. A prediction method similar to what exists for impact noise (EN ISO 12354-2) could also be used, except for upward transmission from commercial space floor to upper floor; the latter configuration is the most common situation in commercial spaces with dwellings above, is so far not considered for impact noise (but could be of interest) and should be considered here. The first step consists in developing a standard for laboratory measurement of building floor systems in terms of rolling noise, including the definition of a reference rolling source; the laboratory measuring procedure could in a second step be transposed to field measurement. The ad hoc group could therefore be linked to CEN TC126 WG7 (see item 6). The needs for in situ prediction will be defined and could then be passed to CEN TC126 WG2, which deals with predicting noise in buildings.
