A correct sample digestion is the most important step for the determination of heavy metals in polymers. A complete digestion of plastics cannot be done following standard digestion procedures like EPA 3051A. Standards like EN 1122 describing open digestion using mixtures of sulfuric acid with HNO3/H2O2 have been found not to deliver correct analysis results and are not applicable for the determination of Pb.
Other standards like EN 15411 or EN 15297 describe only one of the three possible methods which can be used for total digestion of plastics. This document is focusing on the sample preparation of polymers which needs a high specialist knowledge of chemistry and pressure technology.
