ISO/TC 28 N 3020, ISO/NP 5125 Determination of flash point -- Modified continuously closed cup (MCCCFP) method

Scope

This document specifies a test method for the determination of the flash point of chemicals, lube oils, aviation turbine fuel, diesel fuel, diesel/biodiesel blends and other liquids by a continuously closed cup tester utilizing a specimen size of 2 mL, cup size of 7 mL, with a heating rate of 2.5 °C per minute. This flash point test method is a dynamic method and depends on definite rates of temperature increase. It is one of the many flash point test methods available and every flash point test method, including this one, is an empirical method.

This test method is suitable for testing samples with a flash point from 35 °C to 225 °C. Flash point determinations below 35 °C and above 225 °C may be performed, but the precision has not been determined.

Purpose

Due to the continuously closed design, MCCCFP-Testers provide a safe, automatic method to determine the flash point minimizing user interaction and bias. The use of just 2 ml of sample for a test contributes to both, the laboratory and the environmental safety. Invented in the 90ies to provide a safe and portable flashpoint tests method which can be used in mobile labs or on ship vessels, this method got assigned the ASTM standard D7094 and lately also the IP620 from the energy institute. The purpose of this proposal is the adoption of this method as an international ISO standard. There is a verified market need in various countries applying ISO standards like • Europe, India, Korea, Japan or Australia

In these countries the application will be important for the specification of the flash point for fuels and lubricants and other samples that require reporting of the flash point (flammability) in its material safety datasheet (MSDS). In the surveillance of transport regulation like ADR this tester may play a significant role because it can be used mobile and on the streets. Consequently, this new, small scale flash point method brings several advantages to the end user:

• Safety

• Easy and fast to use

• Mobility

• High repeatability
