ISO/TC 61/SC 11 N 1693, ISO/NP 19095-5 Plastics - Evaluation of the adhesion interface performance in plastic-metal assemblies - Part 5: Fracture energy

Scope

This document specifies the principles for characterizing the fracture resistance for the adhesion interface in plastic-metal dissimilar joints. This test method provides a quantitative way of expressing a resistance to failure of the interface when a delaminated area or pre-crack is present at interface. The method can only be used for comparing adhesives, surface treatments, bonding conditions and environmental conditions, and the results cannot be used for design purposes.

Purpose

Along with the progress of bonding technology, structures of heterogeneous materials providing high adhesiveness that is not measurable by the conventional evaluation method are being applied in the industries of automobiles and aerospace industry where higher safety is required.

As an evaluation method of structures made by jointing materials with different strengths (plastic/metal assembles for instance), the existing test method is not appropriate because the property evaluation of the adhesive interface is difficult as the resin base material with relatively lower strength is breakable. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a property evaluation method for breakable adhesive interfaces.

Accordingly, a test method to accurately evaluate the adhesion interface performance or standardization of long-term evaluation under a severe environment became necessary.

The method is intended to ensure the adhesive strength related to adhesive interface and traceability of the value and improve the data comparison, and as a result, it is hoped that the applications of joint structures are expanded rapidly to a wide variety of industries such as automobiles and aerospace industry where the highest reliability is demanded.

This part in ISO 19095 provides a test method to evaluate metal-plastic interfacial fracture energy. Fracture energy is an important property for materials which describes the ability of material with a crack to resist fracture. It ensures material safety and reliability.
