Because recycled materials are used for the WPRC, the durability test is especially considered.
Background: The WPRC has already been issued as ISO 20819:2018 Plastics-Wood-Plastic Recycled Composites (WPRC)-Specification, featuring environmental consciousness. During the process, discussions on the test methods were made, but the relevant countries differed in the test methods, and it was predicted that it would require time to build a consensus. Therefore, after approval at the international meeting, the proposal was excluded from ISO 20819:2018, and then it was considered as a new proposal this time.
Purpose:
This proposal is a new on the part excluded from ISO with the purpose of setting the test methods necessary to address user concerns over the recycled material and eliminate inferior products from the market because a certain amount of recycles material is included in the WPRC. Relationship to related standards:
The relationship between this proposal and the related standards for the WPRC is shown in Fig. 1 in the Annex (position of new proposal). Both the existing standards of ISO 16616:2015 Test Methods for Natural Fibre-Reinforced Plastic Composite (NFC) Deck Boards and ISO 19821:2017 Determination of Span Rating for Natural Fibre-Reinforced Plastic Composite (NFC) Deck Boards are applied to NFC products, and they do not include contents in which those points are not considered. Therefore, they shall be newly considered. This proposal shall be the standard for WPRC material in the same way as ISO 20819:2018.
Regarding the ISO number, ISO 20819, an existing ISO of WPRC, shall be renumbered ISO 20819-1, and this proposal shall be numbered 20819-2.
Outline of standard
This proposal defines the basic physical properties and durability separately. As for basic properties, the proposal is made on the test method for density, strength property (bending strength and impact strength), water absorbability due to wood material, and heat property owing to the plastic material that shall be checked at minimum as initial performance. As for durability, the proposal is made on the test method for bending strength after the accelerated weathering resistance is processed, bending strength and impact strength at high temperature, and bending strength and impact strength after cooling and heating are repeated, in consideration of the concerned reduction in physical properties after deterioration because recycled material that may be damaged is used. Effect to be expected
Clarifying the WPRC test method and disclosing the properties provide further prevalence of the WPRC to contribute to achieving the SDGs. It is presumed that sharing this standard by people in various positions will contribute to the improvements of recycling technologies, quality, and reliability of the whole market. We would like to start discussions to enhance the standard.
