ISO/TC 52 N 76, Light gauge metal containers -- Twist-off caps -- General requirements and test methods

Scope

This document specifies dimensions, classification, general requirement and test method of twist-off caps.

This document is applicable to twist-off caps made from tinplate, used for vacuum tight glass containers in food and beverage packaging, some are subjected to sterilization process.

Purpose

Metal caps are essential components for sealing glass bottles and jars. At present twist-off cap/lug cap is the most commonly used vacuum-type closure for glass containers, which is one of the most traditional packaging form for food and beverage. Twist-off caps are made from tinplate with a thickness of 0.145 - 0.24mm, within the scope of ISO/TC 52.

In ISO/TC 52/N 26 Strategic Business Plan, metal caps, closures and ends are divided to new product category and SAC experts have take the initiative to propose 4 NPs in this field: ISO/NP 4537 Light gauge metal containers — Twist-off caps — Dimensions (ISO/TC 52/N 57, 58, 72) ISO/NP 4544 Light gauge metal containers — Twist-off caps — Measuring method for dimensions (ISO/TC 52/N 59, 60, 73) ISO/NP 5099 Light gauge metal containers — Easy open ends and peel off ends — Dimensions ISO/NP 5100 Light gauge metal containers — Easy open ends and peel off ends — Measuring method for dimensions

According to ballots of ISO/NP 4537 and 4544, it is clear that dimensions of twist-off caps could refer to manufacturers, ISO 9100:2005 Part 1-14 for vacuum lug finishes developed by ISO/TC 63 Glass containers and CEN/TC 261 Packaging, as well as documents of Cetie and Glass Packaging Institute (GPI).

However, there is still lack of international standard which specify general requirements and test methods for twist-off caps. For example, the trend of PVC-free for compound of the cap. As it directly contact with foodstuff inside glass bottles and jars, test method for compound quality is listed in outline. Migration shall be taken into consideration and this part could be included in ISO/NP 4908 Light gauge metal containers in contact with foodstuff — General requirements of migration test. In addition, specific aspect of metal caps such as torsion test could be developed in other NP and cover not only twist-off caps, but also continuous thread (CT) caps, press-twist (PT) caps, roll on pilfer proof (PP/ROPP) caps, etc
