CEN/TC 294 N 938 Communication systems for meters - Part 4: Wireless M-Bus communication

Scope

This European Standard specifies the requirements of parameters for the physical and the link layer for systems using radio to read remote meters. The primary focus is to use the Short Range Device (SRD) unlicensed telemetry bands. The standard encompasses systems for walkby, drive-by and fixed installations. As a broad definition, this European Standard can be applied to various application layers.

Purpose

The European Commission Mandate M/441 asks CEN to develop standards for smart metering, having open architecture, interoperability and flexibility to permit innovations in the standard.

Purpose of this proposal is to integrate innovations for battery driven devices and to increase the performance of wireless meter readout networks.

The CEN TC294 AdHoc Group “Alternative Radio Technologies” has shown in its report that new radio technologies are able to improve communication robustness, to increase cell capacity, to increase energy efficiency and to increase communication range.
