This Technical Specification (TS) will serve as a supporting document to ISO 56000. Its main purpose will be to provide encyclopaedic-type descriptions, including context and examples, of a criterion-based selection of the terms and definitions found in ISO 56000, but it will also provide an overview and link to documents published as part of the ISO 56000 series and other official sources.
While ISO 56000 is a guidance document for the other ISO/TC 279 standards, ensuring coherence and consistency of terminology between the working groups in developing standards for Innovation Management, it is also a technical terminology document requiring a high level of expertise to use. In the terminology there is the object, the term, and the definition, but what is missing and needed are the descriptions. The need for an entry level document with descriptions has been discussed since the original establishment of the working groups and would meet the following agreed upon needs:
• Overview: The most relevant and key concepts from each of the working groups and their descriptions will be accompanied by links to the other official documents published as part of the ISO 56000 series, guiding readers and users where to look for deeper insight and understanding.
• Accessibility: Descriptions put the terminology into a highly consumable and familiar format that will be an asset for practitioners and that can be used to bridge the gaps between the popular view of innovation, the science of innovation management, its practice, and the documents published as part of the ISO 56000 series.
• Onboarding: This more-accessible document can be used to support the process of introducing people to the documents published as part of the ISO 56000 series. This can be used to provide basic understanding to organizations, academia, and media as the agreed upon standards become available to the world.
• Insight: The Working Group for Terms and Definitions (WG2) spent years discussing and incorporating feedback on the concepts, terms, and definitions that are included in 56000, but without descriptions, much of the discussion, clarity, and value is lost. This document will provide insights into and valuable learning from the discussions that resulted in the definitions.
