This document is applicable to twist-off caps made from tinplate and fit vacuum tight glass containers for food and beverage packaging.
Metal caps are essential components for sealing glass jars and bottles in packaging. It is a traditional packaging form for food and beverage. At present twist-off caps or lug caps are the most commonly used vacuum-type closures for glass containers. The vacuum in headspace keeps the hermetic seal and maintain long shelf life for food and beverage products. The primary advantage of twist-off caps is they meet the need of ease opening and closing with 1/4 to 1/2 twist. Twist-off caps are made from tinplate with a thickness of 0.145 to 0.24 mm, within the scope of ISO/TC 52.
Glass containers have different neck finishes and only the appropriate metal caps are able to match. In the case of twist-off caps, they only fit unique thread on lug finishes. The lug finish is particular design for glass containers. CEN/TC 261 Packaging and ISO/TC 63 Glass containers have developed ISO 9100:2005 Part 1-14 for vacuum lug finishes, with commonly used diameters and heights. However, so far there is no international standard for corresponding metal caps.
This document will provide dimension and tolerances for key technical part of commonly used twist-off caps with diameters 30 to 100 mm, to ensure matching with the corresponding glass containers from different suppliers and the seal efficiency of final food and beverage products. It will help end-users to choose the appropriate type of twist-off caps. It will also reach consensual specifications for twist-off caps to facilitate international imports and exports. This project will hopefully followed by continued thread caps, crown caps and pilfer-proof caps for glass bottles, to develop international standards or deliverables for various glass containers.
