JTC1-SC25/2923/NP, Information technology - Implementation and operation of customer premises cabling - Part 5 Sustainability

Scope

Commercial pressures can result in a reduction of environmental sustainability of the cabling infrastructure by forcing imminent requirements to take priority over strategic planning resulting in short-term decisions being taken with regard to design, installation and quality assurance of the cabling infrastructure. In such cases, design choices may be made which, while reducing initial installation costs, can frequently incur medium- to long-term losses due to substantial repair and maintenance costs.

This standard specifies requirements and recommendations to maximize the sustainability of cabling systems including both customer premises infrastructure and the accommodation of information technology equipment by addressing

a) the cabling design,

b) the selection, packaging and transportation of components and related materials,

c) the operation and maintenance of the installation, 

d) the treatment of waste materials,

e) the skillsets necessary for designers, installers and users.

Purpose

Sustainability is most often defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It has three main pillars: economic, environmental, and social - although there appears to be no recorded origin of this concept. True sustainability is generally recognized as being where the three pillars (objectives) overlap.

The sustainability text present in ISO/IEC 14763-2 reflects some aspects of the above but it is not present in other ISO/IEC 11801 standards.

It is self-evident that our first imperative is to offer high-quality networks (in simple and versatile formats) to all (general) network users which offer extended operational life. This has led to the development of new technologies and products that have invigorated the entire industry, which is an aspect that cannot be overlooked. We can safely assert that those who purchase cabling systems, such as building owners, seek products that are both reasonably priced and long-lasting as possible, and which offer high levels of user satisfaction.

However, In order to support the long-term viability of the infrastructure, it is necessary to address the skill levels of those involved in the installation process by improving

• the definition of the necessary skillsets to support the application of ISO/IEC 14763-2 and associated standards rather than relying on proprietary knowledge and specifications used by individual companies,

• the understanding of the cabling design and installation standards to avoid increased costs and to support the training and employment of competent workers,

• the use of the correct tools and equipment, used to install cabling infrastructure, with sufficient functions and that are properly maintained and calibrated.

Moreover, recognizing that elements of the cabling infrastructure and information technology equipment may have to be replaced, sustainability requires the reduction of the impacts with regard to material usage and on users of the cabling infrastructure.

This standard seeks to maximize the sustainability of generic cabling systems including both the customer premises infrastructure and the accommodation of information technology equipment.
