The document would be primarily intended for use by an owner/operator of such areas. This document would not apply to portable electronic equipment that is certified for hazardous areas. Examples of available certified products include pagers, flashlights, and some test instruments.
Portable and battery powered equipment is often unavailable as certified for use in hazardous areas due to a variety of reasons. Generally, the market is too small to support the highly specialized application. As a result, there is a need for additional considerations to be applied to take advantage of this technology in a hazardous area in a safe and workable manner. In 2011, the US published a document to address this problem within the US. The same approach is here proposed to be considered on an international level. It is recognized that the attached document will require extensive modification, and is only provided as a starting point.
