BS 4272-1 Anaesthetic and analgesic machines

Scope

This standard specifies basic requirements from the standpoint of performance and safety, for machines used in dentistry and midwifery. An appendix gives recommendations for periodic field testing of apparatus.

Purpose

What is the standard intended to achieve?

The type of equipment specified in this standard is still in use for dental analgesia. There are no other known standards that can replace it so it would be pertinent to keep this standard.

However it is very dated so could do with being revised and at the very least update the references to other standards.

Who are the intended users? (Please give job roles and industry sectors)

Medical equipment manufacturers. Especially manufacturers of anaesthetic and analgesic machines and devices that derive their driving gas from such a supply e.g. bronchoscopes ventilators etc.

Why will users adopt the standard?

They will need a current standard to satisfy their Notified Bodies and enable them to manufacture these components ensuring interconnectability and compatibility with other manufacturers.

Why might they not use it?

Lack of awareness of updated procedures.
