Scope

“This British Standard gives recommendations for the installation of laminate floor coverings in new or existing buildings. This British Standard details suitable methods for the installation of laminate floors as floating floors and advises on the selection of materials required for their implementation.”

Purpose

The standard is intended to prevent issues when installing laminate flooring to various types of bases. Whilst laminate flooring manufacturers do provide their own installation instructions the BS code of practice provides much more comprehensive information on preparation of the base which will complement any information a manufacturer will provide. The successful installation of the flooring and the longevity of the floor depends on a good base and the correct underlay. Generic installation instruction for the floor covering itself will also harmonise, with exception of manufacturer specific requirements, what is expected of installers to ensure that the laminate flooring performs as expected to maximise the service life and minimise problems due to poor installation.

In addition, CEN TC 134 have recently published a standard for the testing and classification of laminate flooring underlays (EN 16354), the revision of the BS code of practice represents a good opportunity to incorporate and therefore introduce this new information to the users of the code. The use of the correct underlay is an important aspect for the flooring to perform as expected and as the standard brings a new classification system it a good platform for flooring installers (contractors and DIYers) to understand better the underlays that are proposed for use in installations and whether they would be suitable for their particular situation.
