Picrates and picric acid has been used and are possibly still used in compositions for whistles and reports because of their high sensitivity giving them explosive properties. Fireworks using these chemicals must be handled with care and ISO experts have considered such articles should not be sold to consumers as well as professionals to prevent accidents that may cause severe damages to users. Alternatives exists, e.g. based on the use of gallic acid, benzoic acid and benzoates, sodium salicylate, etc.
It is proposed to develop a standard defining a test method that could be appropriate to detect the presence of picrates and picric acid, if any, e.g. in market surveillance to assure the promotion of fireworks complying with the ISO standards that were recently published.
