ISO/NP TS 23157 - ISO/TC 256 N 521 Determination of silanol group content on the surface of fumed silica -- Reaction gas chromatographic method

Scope

This document provides one method on determination of silanol group content on the surface of fumed silica. It includes principle, reagent, apparatus, sampling and sample pre-treatment, procedure and calculation.

Purpose

Fumed silica (pyrogenic silicon dioxide), one of the nanoparticles manufactured in large scale, is one kind of pure amorphous white inorganic powder which has high specific surface area, nano-scale primary particle size, and a relatively high concentration of surface silanol groups. These above specific features bring excellent reinforcement properties, thicken effects and thixotropy properties to fumed silica when used as important ingredient in many industries such as silicone rubbers, coating and paints, sealant and adhesives, plastics and many more. Determination the content of silanol groups on the surface of fumed silica is not only important to downstream application industry but also is very critical and meaningful for its further surface modification. The silanol groups on the surface of fumed silica can be chemically reacted by organic modifier to obtain modified series products. Commercially available fumed silica can be divided into two groups: hydrophilic fumed silica and hydrophobic fumed silica. There is no silanol group content determination method in current standards of ISO 3262-20: 2000 Extenders for paints — Specifications and methods of test — Part 20: Fumed silica and ISO 18473-3 Functional pigments and extenders for special application — Part 3: Fumed silica for silicone rubber application. This testing method will be a beneficial reference for these two standards and will also facilitate the communication and commercialization between interested parties and help generate consistent performance in the final products. This standard can also further promote fumed silica and its application industry development.
