Find out what cookies we use and how to disable themThis British Standard provides recommendations and guidance on the design of pavements surfaced with modular paving produced in accordance with BS EN 1338, BS EN 1339, BS EN 1340, BS EN 1341, BS EN 1342, BS EN 1343 and BS EN 1344 respectively and constructed in accordance with BS 8000-X .
It applies to all paved areas including those not subject to vehicular traffic and those subjected to the axle loads of standard highway vehicles up to a total of 30 million standard axles (msa) over its life. This includes highway pavements and industrial pavements where the traffic is similar in character to highway vehicles.
It excludes other applications such as aircraft pavements, and those in ports and specialized industrial areas.
What is the standard intended to achieve?
The BS 7533 series of 12 parts covered the use of concrete, clay pavers, stone setts, and concrete and stone slabs or flags, and was published between 2001 and 2010. It was published because the use of these products significantly increased as public realm improvement schemes introduced more hard landscaping and the cost of the products became more competitive and some were of sufficient quality.
The provisions contained within these documents have become obsolete. Increased use of the document also identified that having so many parts caused confusion amongst designers and installers, and errors were introduced in terms of design and premature failure. By rewriting the standard and reducing the number of standards available to one simplifies the design process for users and will reduce significant errors.
The standard is also referenced in the Manual for Contracts and Highway Works, Volumes 1 and 2.
Who are the intended users? (Please give job roles and industry sectors)
o Public sector designers and suppliers
o UK local authorities including county and district councils
o Metropolitan authorities such as TfL, Highways England, Transport Scotland the National Assembly for Wales and the Department For Regional Development Northern Ireland
o Network Rail for station platforms
o Airport owners for their landside operations who make extensive use of modular paving. NOTE - As well as in-house capability, airport owners use of over 100 consultants who provide design services. They also have planners and environmental specialists who are consulted when hard landscaping using modular paving in accordance with this standard.
- Architects for commercial and residential developments
- Most developments have some hard landscaping using modular paving in and around them. The document is necessary to provide their design teams with the required information
- Contractors, suppliers and their design teams need the document when they are asked to provide design and install services for modular paving. This is particularly commonplace in the private sector. They also need the document to ensure they are providing what the designer requires.
