This subpart of the IEC 61158-2 (all parts) [6] subseries specifies an Ethernet based Physical Layer (PhL) with additions to be applicable in intrinsic safety applications as part of process automation and can also be used in non-hazardous applications for process automation, factory automation, building automation, control equipment and similar application domains. This technology is called in this document Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer (APL) or Ethernet-APL and single pair Ethernet (SPE) called in this document Ethernet-SPE.
This document specifies
– Ethernet-APL intrinsically safe profiles with different predefined entity or limitation parameters (for example voltage, current, power, capacitance, inductance, cable length) that simplify the examination of the interconnection of different Ethernet-APL ports and
– profiles including hazardous locations not requiring intrinsic safety like 2-wire intrinsically safe Ethernet (2-WISE) concept.
This document refers to IEEE Std 802.3-2022, Clause 146 that specifies the Ethernet Physical Layer 10BASE-T1L and to IEEE Std 802.3dg:2026, Clause 190 that specifies the Ethernet Physical Layer 100BASE-T1L. Both are single pair (2-wire) Ethernet (SPE) technologies supporting full-duplex communication data rate of 10 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s.
Ethernet-SPE provides communication and optional power over the same single pair cables. The power can alternatively use
– a Power over Data Lines (SPE) compliant technology for non-intrinsically safe Ethernet installations by referring to IEEE Std 802.3-2022, 104.1 as corrected and amended by IEEE 802.3dd-2022 or
– an optional power interface for Non-intrinsically safe Ethernet installations specified in this document.
Ethernet-APL and Ethernet-SPE can be combined. This document supports long distance between two communicating devices that are powered or unpowered with the same single pair Ethernet by referring to cable lengths with spans up to 1 000 m for 10BASE-T1L or 500 m for 100BASE-T1L.
NOTE 1 This document does not specify a set of rules for communication expressed in terms of the procedures to be carried out by peer Ph-entities at the time of communication as it is the case for the IEC 61158-2-1 to IEC 61158-2-tt, where tt is the highest number of the subseries below 100. Based on this difference, this document uses an offset starting with the number 100 to underline the difference.
NOTE 2 The associated requirements of Ethernet-APLand Ethernet-SPEfor the installation are provided in IEC 61918.
NOTE 3 This document can be referred by communication profiles in the communication profile family documents IEC 61784 -1 [3] subseries and IEC 61784-2 [4] subseries as an amendment to other Types specified in the IEC 61158 series [2].
NOTE 4 As a simplification, this document describes some applications as not requiring 2-WISE . This is intended to indicate an application in a non-hazardous area or in a hazardous area employing a type of protection other than intrinsic safety.
