Scope

This part of IEC 60479 describes special aspects of the effect of electrostatic discharge (ESD) on the human body. A discussion of static electricity, its effects on the human body and the safety of static discharge have been included.

The breadth of the topic of Static Electricity makes it possible only to provide a brief introduction at this point in order to anticipate safety features documented below. The work of TC 101 (Electrostatics) and TC 31 (Equipment for explosive atmospheres) is especially acknowledged, and the documents IEC TR 61340-1:2012 and IEC TS 60079-32-1:2013 , respectively are recommended as general references to the theory and hazards wider than the human being. The discussion of technical aspects here is general only, and definitive theory is obtained in IEC TR 61340-1:2012.

This part of IEC 60479 does not cover lightning which is covered in IEC 60479-4.
