Scope

This document provides requirements and guidelines for the design and implementation of electronic labels for a wide range of products. The document covers the design principles, technical specifications, and implementation guidelines for electronic labels, including but not limited to those used in consumer goods, industrial products, and medical devices.

The scope of this document for electronic labels the following:

a)      The document provides requirements and guidance for capturing the identity of a product and providing that product data electronically.

b)      The document provides specifications for electronic labelling.

c)      The document provides requirements and guidance on how to integrate electronic labels into products.

Electronic labelling is intended for use by consumers, business users, manufacturers, designers, and authorities having jurisdiction. This document does not prescribe the content of the electronic label. The document is designed to promote the use of consistent and effective electronic labelling practices across a broad range of sectors and products.

An electronic label is intended to be machine readable. The electronic label has information embedded in it or is a pointer to the electronic storage location or combination of both and can take the form of QR code; Barcode, RFID, NFC; Multiple symbology; data matrix. This can also be information embedded in the equipment accessed through the equipment or remotely.
