Scope

This standard describes guidelines on the determination of the chromatographic profile of an essential oil by gas chromatography on a capillary column, whether in the context of a standard development project, the revision of an existing standard, or to perform the chromatographic profile of an essential oil sample for comparison with an existing standard.

The chromatographic profile is one of the specifications that enables assessment of the quality of an essential oil, alongside physico-chemical characteristics. It is determined during the development of the specific standard for that essential oil.

This process does not consist of determining the actual concentration of the compounds, but of evaluating their relative proportions through the use of the internal normalization method (see ISO 7609), which involves measuring the relative areas of the peaks (see Clause 4).
