Scope

This document provides an overview of the ISO 20271 series.

The ISO 20271 series offers a reference model and framework for understanding textual documents and the properties that may be present within them. The reference model addresses technical issues and provides assessment criteria to determine which digital components (layers) or metadata are desirable or necessary for long-term preservation, as well as to evaluate the suitability of formats for this purpose.

The following are within the scope of this document:

— stating the scope of the ISO 20271 series as a whole;

— describing the target documents;

— describing the structure of the ISO 20271 series;

— providing a summary of the content of each part in the ISO 20271 series;

— providing guidelines for the extension of other types of document formats;
