Scope

This International Standard covers the specification and test methods for unused synthetic organic esters.

NOTE 1: the main part of this standard covers K class (IEC 61039) unused synthetic organic esters.

It applies to synthetic organic esters, delivered to the agreed point and time of delivery intended, for use in transformers, switchgear and similar related equipment in which synthetic organic esters are required as an insulant and for heat transfer.

These unused synthetic organic esters are obtained by chemical processing and physical treatments of fatty acids and polyols (polyalcohol).

Synthetic organic esters with additives are within the scope of this document.

This document is applicable only to unused synthetic organic esters. Reclaimed synthetic organic esters and synthetic organic esters blended with other insulating liquids are beyond the scope of this document.

NOTE 2: Maintenance of synthetic organic esters in equipment is covered in a separate standard (IEC 61203).

NOTE 3: In this document the term "synthetic esters" applies to insulating liquids for transformers and similar electrical equipment with suitable biodegradability and lower environmental impact.
