Scope

This International Standard IEC 63518-1 covers non-metal-oxide Line Surge Arresters (LSA), known as Surge-initiated Arc Suppressor (SAS) devices. These devices consist of one or more arc quenching chambers in series with an air gap(s) and are used on transmission and distribution power lines with system voltages greater than 1 kV AC, primarily to protect insulator assemblies from lightning-related flashovers.
