This part of IEC 61557 specifies the requirements for earthing impedance monitor (EIM) which permanently monitor the earthing impedance Ze used in:
- a.c. IT systems with voltages up to 1 000 V a.c.
- a.c. IT systems with galvanically connected d.c circuits having nominal voltages up to 1 000 V a.c., 1 500 V d.c.
- d.c. IT systems with voltages up to 1 500 V d.c.
The earthing impedance in IT-systems is described in IEC 60364-1 and IEC 60364-4-41 as possible connection between one live conductor and earth.
NOTE 1 Various standards specify the use of an earthing impedance for different purposes (functional and protection purposes). The objective of the equipment is to signal a change of the value of the earthing impedance as it can affect the ability to fulfill the purpose for which it was designed.
NOTE 2 In the first version of this standard just the monitoring of resistive earthing impedances is covered.
