This document specifies general principles for ISO 21282, “Determination of mass of carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestrated in concrete and concrete constituents” series. This document specifies methods for quantifying CO2 sequestrated in concrete and concrete constituents in the form of stable inorganic carbonates. CO2 in natural inorganic carbonates such as limestone is not included in the scope of this document.
This document is applicable to cementitious materials other than concrete and concrete products.
NOTE 1 Chemical admixture used for concrete generally contains carbon. The CO2 originating from the chemical admixtures in measurements is considered negligible due to its small amount. However, when the mass of a very small amount of sequestrated CO2 is to be determined, it is necessary to consider the CO2 attributable to chemical admixtures. In case the amount of sequestrated CO2 is to be determined from the difference between the object material and a reference material, in principle, the amount of CO2 originating from chemical admixtures is also subtracted.
NOTE 2 Stable inorganic carbonates are carbonates that are chemically unreactive under normal environmental conditions and are not readily dissolved or washed from the material, including examples such as calcium carbonate (CaCO3), magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Inorganic carbonates, such as bicarbonates (HCO3-) and carbonates ions (CO32-), that readily dissolve in the pore solution of concrete and similar materials are considered unstable within the scope of this document.
