Scope

This document describes the principle, apparatus, materials, shale sample preparation, procedure, calculation, numerical rounding and precision, and test reporting for determination of shale porosity using helium pycnometry.

This document can be used for the determination of porosity in resource evaluation, fine characterization of reservoirs, reserve calculation, target selection, etc. in shale gas exploration and development.

This document does not specify requirements for core sampling operations; it is applicable only to the analysis and testing of core samples that have been delivered to the laboratory.
