Scope

WARNING — The electronic file of this document contains colours which are considered to be useful for the correct understanding of the document. Users should therefore consider printing this document using a colour printer.

This document specifies requirements and recommendations for ultrasonic gas flowmeters (USMs) that measure the time of flight of ultrasonic signals to calculate the flow rate. These USMs are intended for non-fiscal applications such as utilities and process measurement in industrial environments.

It applies to USMs measuring single-phase homogeneous gases in closed conduits, covering a wide range of pipe sizes and operating conditions.

The document focuses on functional performance, robustness, and installation considerations for operational monitoring and control. It includes guidance on meter design, construction, diagnostics, and verification, while recognizing that accuracy requirements are application-dependent and generally less stringent than those for custody transfer.

NOTE This part does not cover flare or vent gas measurement, which is addressed in ISO 17089-3.
