Scope

This clause of Part 1 is applicable with the following limitations. This part of IEC 60598 covers requirements for portable luminaires for children for use either indoors or outdoors. This document is intended to provide an enhanced safety luminaire for use in an unattended children’s environment.

Note 1: Portable luminaires for children are designed to provide a level of safety in excess of that provided by a portable general purpose luminaire conforming with IEC 60598-2-4.

Note 2: A portable luminaire that can be advertised or intended to be attractive to children, appeal to children, used or operated by children, is considered to be a portable luminaire for children within the meaning of this document.

Note 3: Fixed or free standing luminaires which would normally fall within the scope of this standard, required by the manufacturer’s instructions to be fixed to a wall or other surface but are still manifestly complete without fixing and can be detached and operated without fixing to the surface, are considered to be portable luminaires for children within the meaning of this document

Note 4. : If the portable luminaire also has features designed or intended for “play” by children, IEC 62115 “Electric toys-Safety” applies instead

Note 5: This document also cover non-rechargeable or rechargeable Battery powered luminaires.

This document is not applicable to the following:

– Luminaires typically placed as an extra ornamental element in temporary decorative configurations due to festivities or celebrations, such as outdoor luminaires to be mounted beyond arms reach.

– Low luminance (light output) background product integral with a plug, for example, an indicator part of a plug-in device where the primary function is not lighting

– Luminaires designed or clearly intended for adult use, or when it is clear from the manufacturer’s instructions, marketing and packaging, it is not a portable luminaire for children and does not include features that promote a child’s exploration, imagination, curiosity or encourages interest.

–        Electric toys within the scope of IEC 62115

–         Luminaires within the scope of IEC 60598-2-12

–         Luminaires within the scope of IEC 60598-2-20 and IEC 60598-2-21
