This document specifies requirements and test methods applicable to hand protective devices and hand protective device assembly’s for electrical workers against the thermal hazards of an electric arc.
Electric shock hazards are not covered by this document. The present standard is applicable in combination with standards covering such hazards.
Other effects than the thermal effects of an electric arc like noise, light emissions, pressure rise, hot oil, electric shock, the consequences of physical and mental shock or toxic influences are not covered by this document.
The document also provides guidance on specification of optional characteristics of work gloves requiring mechanical protection in addition to the thermal hazards of electric arc.
This document uses test methods to produce an arc rating using IEC 63232-1-1 or an arc protective class (APC) using IEC 63232-2. For devices which are not flame resistant, the standard employs an ignition threshold level requirement to assure these devices are not used past a level of their protective ability.
Protection of body, eyes, face, head, and feet against electric arc hazard is not covered by this standard.
Hand protective device for work intentionally using an electric arc, e.g., arc welding, plasma torch are not covered by this document.
