ISO/NP 25912 Metallic and other inorganic coatings — Hexavalent chromium-free chemical conversion coatings on aluminium and Its alloys

Scope

This document specifies the classification, requirements and test methods for rinsed and rinse-free hexavalent chromium-free chemical conversion coatings on aluminium and aluminium alloys. This document applies to hexavalent chromium-free chemical conversion coatings on extruded aluminium and aluminium alloy components, profiles, coils, sheets, as well as cast aluminum alloy parts. The Hexavalent chromium-free conversion coatings may serve as standalone anti-corrosion layers or as a base layer for organic coatings (such as paints, rubber, or adhesives).

Purpose

Chemical conversion coatings on aluminium and its alloys are a critical process to give protection against corrosion and as a base of other coatings. While traditional chromate conversion processes offer operational simplicity and excellent performance, they contain hexavalent chromium (Cr) - a recognized carcinogen that poses serious health risks to workers and causes significant environmental pollution.

With increasingly stringent global environmental regulations, hexavalent chromium processes are facing comprehensive restrictions. Regulatory frameworks including the EU's RoHS Directive and REACH Regulation, the U.S. TSCA, as well as corresponding regulations in China, Japan, and South Korea have all imposed strict controls on hexavalent chromium use. In this context, trivalent chromium and chromium-free conversion processes are gradually replacing traditional hexavalent chromium treatments in industrial applications due to their environmentally friendly characteristics.

This document specifies the technical requirements and test methods for hexavalent chromium-free chemical conversion coatings, aiming to ensure coating performance meets industrial requirements while promoting sustainable development in aluminium processing. The document applies to the production, testing, and acceptance of hexavalent chromium-free conversion coatings on aluminium and its alloys, providing technical specifications for all segments of the industrial chain. The implementation of this standard will effectively promote technological innovation in the aluminum processing industry, ensuring industrial development while genuinely safeguarding human health and the ecological environment, representing a significant initiative in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Strategy.
