Scope

This document specifies a method for the determination of selected carbonyls (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, acrolein, propionaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, 2-butanone and butyraldehyde) as their 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones in mainstream smoke using reversed phase HPLC-UV/DAD with impregnated glass fibre filter pad.

This method is applicable to cigarettes with nicotine-free dry particulate matter (NFDPM) yields between 1 mg/cigarette and 15 mg/cigarette using reversed phase HPLC-UV/DAD.

Note: The analytical method cannot separate n-butyraldehyde and iso-butyraldehyde and therefore the method reports butyraldehyde (sum of n-butyraldehyde and iso-butyraldehyde) based on the response factor of n-butyraldehyde.

Purpose

The proposed method using filter pads collecting selected carbonyls offers a simplified, labor-saving, and efficient method with enhanced safety, making it highly suitable for high-throughput analysis of selected carbonyls in the mainstream smoke of cigarettes. As shown in N 2210, the proposed method has been thoroughly discussed within TC 126/AHG 1. It is agreed by the Ad-hoc group that the method should be submitted as a new work item proposal, which can be developed in parallel with ISO 21160. Based on the discussion during the last plenary meeting, the ad-hoc group has been transferred to WG 28, in which the method will be developed. The purposed of this NWIP is therefore to initiate the work for the development of this standard.
