Scope

• Updates to subclause 5.3 Phosphorescent signs, to give an overview of the application of phosphorescent signs. And a new paragraph and note to deal with luminance performance of installed escape route signs.

• Replace Clause 7 Construction: durability and suitability with clause 4.11 of BS 5499-10:2014+A1:2023 to update guidance on flammability criteria of the materials used for safety signs.

• Inclusion of a new Annex D to cover un-illuminated phosphorescent signs

Purpose

• The standard is currently lacking guidance on the application of phosphorescent signs and information about luminance performance of installed escape route signs.

• The standard needs to be brought up to date to align with the flammability criteria for materials used for safety signs that is now recommended in BS 5499-10:2014+A1:2023 (introduced by A1:2023).

• The application of un-illuminated phosphorescent escape route signs is not currently covered in the standard or elsewhere. The new Annex D draws upon technical information from BS ISO 16069: 2017 on luminance performance of installed phosphorescent escape signs meeting class C of BS ISO 17398 and the change of identification distance of the sign with time after any external lighting is extinguished.
