Scope

This document specifies a method for determination of the cold compressive strength of dense shaped refractory products. Shaped refractories are those which have fixed geometry and dimensions when delivered to the user.

This document is accordingly applicable to standard shape refractory bricks, but also special shapes refractory products and pre-cast products.

Purpose

The cold crushing strength (CCS) is a critical property of refractory products.

The third edition of ISO 10059-1 from March 2025 is based on the EN 993-5 standard and constitutes a further improvement of the latter.

The identical adoption of ISO 10059-1:2025 (Dense shaped refractory products — Determination of cold compressive strength - Part 1: Referee test without packing) in replacement of the current EN 993-5:2018 will accordingly provide both the producers and users of refractory products with the most up to date testing protocol for the determination of this essential product characteristic.

Such adoption of ISO/TC 33 relevant standards ensures harmonization within the EU and the users benefit from continuity and consistency of technical content at European and national levels.
